Disney+ hits hard with its next series. The critics are unanimous: we have the series that will finally be able to compete with the HBO juggernaut Game of Thrones.
ShÅ gun, the new gem from Disney+
Do you know ShÅ gun? This is the next Disney+ miniseries, adapted from the best-selling book of the same name written by James Clavell. And as its name suggests, it will take us to the great era of feudal Japan. Suffice to say that if you are impatiently waiting for Rise of the Ronin, ShÅ gun is perhaps the production you need to wait more peacefully. But be careful, the two works do not cover exactly the same period and of course do not offer the same story. ShÅ gun is the story of John Blackthorne, a captain of a Dutch ship that ran aground near a fishing village in Japan. The man then finds himself at the heart of a major political conflict. Between secrets, betrayals and great History, that's the pitch of ShÅ gun.
In 1600 Japan, Lord Yoshii Toranaga fights for survival as his enemies in the Council of Regents gang up on him, when a mysterious European ship is found stranded in a nearby fishing village.
Synopsis de Disney+
As for the technical aspect, know that this mini-series will include 10 episodes of approximately 1 hour. As showrunners, we find Justin Marks (Top Gun: Maverick, The Jungle Book) and Rachel Kondo (Girl of Few Seasons). ShÅ gun is scheduled for February 27 on Disney+ only. From this date, an episode will be revealed each week. Not convinced ? Well, the press has already been able to discover the series and will perhaps change your mind!
Un rival pour Game of Thrones ?
“An authentic masterpiece”… These are the words used by Judy Berman of Time Magazine. Overall, all the American press agrees that this is a very ambitious series, well above the usual productions of SVOD platforms, and that it should not be missed under any circumstances. Among the positive points, the journalists note the performance of the actors, the “stunning” visual effects or even the right balance found between fidelity to the original book and the modernization of the story. Some even argue that the series could “finally become the first worthy replacement for Game of Thrones” (Brennan Klein for Screen Rant). Phil Hornshaw from Gamespot adds: “Since Game of Thrones ended in 2019, I've been wanting an expansive medieval political intrigue. FX’s adaptation of James Clavell’s 1975 novel Shōgun provides exactly what I wanted.”
And inevitably, this very positive feedback is reflected in the grades. So far, the series has a perfect score of 100 on Rotten Tomatoes. Note that an adaptation of James Clavell's novel had already seen the light of day in 1980. For comparison, it now has a score of 75 on the press side and 90 on the audience side. Of course, as for the series, the audience rating has yet to be discovered. See you on February 27 to see if the public will be as won over.
