The open source messenger Signal is further expanding data protection security and is thus fighting against the dominance of Whatsapp. The developers have now confirmed the concept tested last fall that user names will be used to better protect the phone number. The usernames can be regenerated as often as you like and are used to establish initial contact and not as a permanent contact, as is the case with Telegram. You will still need a phone number to register with Signal. However, the phone numbers are only displayed if they are stored in your address book and you can choose whether you want to be found using the phone number if someone has it to hand.
WhatsApp will soon receive alternative profiles for more privacy
The circulation of telephone numbers should be significantly reduced, which should ultimately also help spam. Signal usernames are more like selectable, disposable email addresses. In principle, contact and subsequent conversation can be made without a telephone number; even if you are face to face with the contact – a QR code can be scanned. In order to increase security, the use of security numbers is generally recommended.
The project started as an idea in 2019 and matured over time. In 2022 it was decided that we would like to develop further in this direction and implement numberless contact. Signal had already developed the basic technology in 2020 and it is also behind the Signal PIN.
“Importantly, this is all optional. While we have changed the default setting to hide your phone number from people who do not have it saved in their phone contacts, you can change this setting. You are not required to provide a username and you have full control over whether or not you want people to be able to find you by your phone number. Whatever you choose for yourself and your friends, you will still be able to use your connections in Signal to communicate, past and present.” When does it start? “Soon”. If you can't wait, you can find out more and test it in Signal's beta channel.
