Ubisoft bills pirate action game Skull & Bones as the first “AAAA” game, but players clearly do not share this point of view. According to Insider Gaming citing its sources, about 850 thousand people have currently played Skull and Bones. However, this includes those who are taking advantage of the eight-hour free trial.
On average, players spend three to four hours a day playing Skull and Bones. But we can find out how many of the current players will decide to pay $70 after the trial period expires only from the company’s earnings report, which will be published around May 2024.
One of the main factors for the low number of players was the high price of the game. According to rumors, this decision was criticized even by the company’s employees, who “valued” it at $30-40. And this is backed up by Skull and Bones' scores: it received a 57 on Metacritic according to critics and 3.1 user ratings.
Insider Gaming previously reported that the game allegedly cost the company approximately $200 million. Thousands of developers worked on it for about ten years in 11 different studios. The result was repeated restarts and release delays. And fans of pirate romance are looking forward to the remake of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag.
