One of the most anticipated retro consoles has finally returned to distribution. We tested Polymega, the console that “resurrected” your games from Mega CD, PS1, Saturn and more.
It seemed like it would never happen, but… you have to believe in miracles! Playmaji, the company that created Polymega, It disappeared from the radar for months, after they stopped manufacturing it due to the pandemic crisis. The device was destined to revolutionize retro collecting… But little by little the unfulfilled promises undermined consumer confidence.
At the end of 2023, after many had given up on the case, Playmaji gave signs of life again and to promise that units reserved years ago (we reserved it in 2021!) would begin shipping to users around the world. And they have delivered! He just came through the door for us just a couple of days ago.
The beauty of the device is its modular nature: with the base device, you can read CDs from Mega-CD, PlayStation, SEGA Saturn, PC Engine CD or Neo Geo CD, whatever region they are from. But to that device we can add specific modules from other consoles: NES, SNES, Mega Drive and Mega Drive 32-X, PC-Engine / Turbografx and Nintendo 64for now.
Each one of them reads cartridges from any region and, although they come with their own module-specific control, they are also compatible with the original controls. Although the console is not based on FPGA (something that was originally said) but in emulation, the result is quite satisfactory and, in addition, it allows us to dump the games into the internal memory to run them whenever we want.
Furthermore, we can sort them by playlists (by type of console, by year of release, by genre or however we want) to be able to access our collection of games, digitally and comfortably, in one fell swoop, without having to “spend” the original product, which we can continue to keep .
It has its drawbacks, of course: the console is expensive (only the base module is 500 euros plus shipping), as it is emulation, the experience is never completely exact and certain games give some problems when playing, but The general finish is very good, its firmware is constantly updated and above all it makes life much easier to organize and enjoy our collection on the fly.
Now that we have reviewed What is Polymega and how to use it?What retro video games or consoles would you like us to talk about in future installments of Chocheluismos? Leave your suggestions in the comments below and we'll return every Saturday to address them. In original or modern format, lady!
