A few days after the official debut on the market, expected exclusively on PS5 on February 29th, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is gathering support left and right. Specialized critics are praising it, pushing it towards a sumptuous Meta Score of 92. This pushed us to ask ourselves a very specific question: What is the best Final Fantasy ever?.
Answering such a question is difficult, if not impossible, since the answer cannot ignore purely subjective factors. The saga has been around for more than 35 years and has dozens of chapters spread across the most disparate gaming platforms. Having spanned multiple generations, every player has their favorite Final Fantasy.
Still intending to give an answer to this question, we therefore relied on the most objective measure at our disposal, Metacritic, well aware however that the review aggregator does not hold the absolute truth. Looking at its database, we found that according to critics the best FF ever is Final Fantasy 9being equipped with a Meta Score pari a 94. Launched on PlayStation in 2000, the game directed by Hiroyuki Ito (formerly Game Director of FF6 and subsequently also responsible for FF12) evidently managed to satisfy the very high expectations that had arisen at the time after two high-level episodes like Final Fantasy 7 and Final Fantasy 8.
Immediately following the ninth final fantasy are Final Fantasy the new Final Fantasy 7 Rebirthall of them with a Meta Score of 92. While you're at it, read what we think of the latest exponent of the saga in our review of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.
