The popular messenger Whatsapp is constantly working on new functions that either enrich the range of functions or ensure better privacy for users. The latter is the case in the recently released beta version 2.24.4.25: With the new update it is no longer possible to create screenshots of other users' profile pictures. The option to save such an image to the gallery using the three-dot menu (accessible from the profile view) was removed years ago.

This additional lock is intended to add an additional layer of security so that users can be assured that profile photos cannot be downloaded or distributed without authorization. If such a screenshot is attempted anyway, the user will only receive the notification “Screenshot cannot be taken due to app restrictions”. Users receive a similar notification from online banking apps; Here too, the creation of screenshots is excluded from the outset.
Logically, taking the screenshot using a secondary device cannot be prevented, but at least this is another step towards reducing the risk of potential misuse of the profile photos. Alternatively, WhatsApp users can also create digital avatars to be on the safe side. The WhatsApp beta version 2.24.2.25 is initially only activated for Android; an equivalent iOS update is still a long time coming. As usual, the new version is available for download via the Google Play Store Beta Program.
