Here is the Developer Preview 2 of Android 15. It is the last step before the beta version and it already provides interesting information on the new features to come in the update.

Development of Android 15 continues. After Developer Preview 1 necessarily comes Developer Preview 2. As a reminder, this is a version of the update intended primarily for application developers so that they can start working on the future version of the OS and adapt their apps. We are therefore far from a finished and stable version, but we are taking a further step in this direction.
Messaging with satellite communication
DP2 shows that Android 15 will benefit from a better designed interface in terms of notifications and status bar indicators when messaging services exploit satellite communication. A “NonTerrestrialNetwork” API is emerging to allow applications to “detect when a device is connected to a satellite, allowing them to better understand why complete network services may be unavailable”, we read in the Android blog official for developers.

Third-party SMS and MMS applications will be able to use all the APIs set up for the satellite connection. On the other hand, only “pre-installed” applications will have access to the APIs concerning the RCS protocol. Here, it must be understood that Google Messages will therefore have an advantage in terms of functionality.
More functions for PDFs
Android 15 will also see “substantial improvements” for viewing PDF files. It is thus a question of making more advanced functions available to applications. They will be able to view password-protected files and offer annotations, form editing, search and selection with copy.

The PDFRenderer developer tool – which is at the center of these new features – is also experiencing a small change. It now becomes a module whose updates will be managed via Google Play so that its version no longer depends on the level of Android update installed on the device.
Flip smartphones and noise level
There is also something new for folding smartphones in Flip format. Developers can therefore opt for a function that allows them to more easily offer their applications on the external screens of these devices. It is specified that the display will not be optimized due to the limited size of the panels concerned, but that's already it.
Finally, Android 15's DP2 also supports the CTA-2075 sound intensity standard. The goal is to have better audio volume consistency when switching from one application to another. No need to adjust the level each time, and this applies to the smartphone's speakers as well as the headphones you connect to it.

Smartphones compatible with Android 15 Developer Preview 2
Android 15 DP2 is available on the Google Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 7a, Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro and Pixel Fold. The Pixel Tablet can also benefit from it. Remember that this is a very unstable version that we do not recommend installing if you are a newbie.
The first beta, a little more advanced, is expected in April while the stable update will probably be available at the start of the school year.
