Already this week, Samsung may show off to MWC 2024 visitors a prototype of the Galaxy Ring smart ring, which it mentioned at the end of January. There is no such wearable device in Apple’s product range yet, but this does not mean that the very idea of creating one is not being considered by the company’s specialists. They are also thinking about equipping Air Pods with cameras and creating smart glasses that can be worn all day.
The list of Apple initiatives that are at different stages of implementation was traditionally listed at the end of the week by Mark Gurman on the pages of Bloomberg. According to him, Apple has been hatching a plan for several years to expand the range of smart devices that would functionally provide users with control over their own health to one degree or another. The furthest thing from implementation is the idea of releasing an Apple smart ring, which would allow tracking heart rate, blood oxygen saturation, the number of steps taken and counting calories burned. In fact, such a ring would become a compact and cheaper alternative to the Apple Watch, since the company believes that not all users of wearable electronics need additional functions that are offered by smart watches and at the same time repeat the capabilities of a smartphone, for example.
The idea of creating smart glasses that could be worn comfortably all day has also been discussed at Apple for a very long time, and the appearance on the market of the Vision Pro headset does not in any way reduce its relevance. Potentially lighter augmented reality glasses could not only become an alternative to this device, but also replace wireless headphones for some users. In addition to cameras, displays and speakers, such smart glasses will need to be equipped with a microphone to receive voice commands, as well as various sensors to monitor the user’s health.
Finally, the third direction of rationalization in the segment of Apple wearable devices involves equipping AirPods wireless headphones with cameras, which are needed for a clearer perception of the environment and interaction with artificial intelligence systems. At the same time, the developers would like not to greatly increase the overall dimensions of the headphones. Wearables now account for about 10% of Apple's revenue, but product expansion in the segment has slowed and new incentives are needed to maintain demand. New categories of wearable devices are designed to solve this problem.
