According to the lawsuit, Breen allegedly tried to “destroy evidence of the crime.”
The crash occurred in May 2023 off the coast of California while pilots Lance McLean and Dean Rushfedlt were delivering Brin's seaplane to Fiji. The $8 million twin-engine Viking Air Twin Otter Series 400 required an auxiliary fuel system, which the suit alleges was built by a mechanic “from memory” and not registered with the Federal Aviation Administration.
The lawsuit accuses Brin, Google and several other companies of “improperly installing the system” and “attempting to destroy evidence.”
It is reported that the fuel system failed during the first stage of the flight, and when trying to turn around, the plane fell into the ocean. The Coast Guard, which arrived 15 minutes later, was unable to extricate the pilots and vehicle.
According to the complaint, Brin allegedly promised that he would help recover the bodies of the victims, but representatives of the billionaire subsequently told McLean's widow, Maria Magdalena Olarte, that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration had rejected the request.
Olarte is seeking damages on five charges and a jury trial.
LTA is creating airships for cargo and passenger transport, in which Sergey Brin (Google co-founder) has already invested more than $250 million.
