To properly explore the expansive open world of “Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth,” nothing is better than a Chocobo. We'll tell you how you can catch the big running birds and why they are so important in action RPGs.
Warning, slight spoilers follow: Unlike the fairly linear “Final Fantasy 7 Remake”, the successor lets you „Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth“ explore a large open world. Although you can also experience your adventure on foot in these sections, it is much more stylish and fun on the back of a chocobo! The large running birds are, so to speak, the mascots of the “FF” franchise and are also there again in “Rebirth”.
The development team at Square Enix came up with something special for the middle part of the Remake Project trilogy. This time the chocobos don't just fall into your lap by chance, but have to be found first. In this guide, we'll tell you exactly how this works and why it can be worthwhile to keep your eyes open for chocobos during your adventure with Cloud Strife, Aerith & Co.
This is how you unlock Chocobos in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth
Although the start of “Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth” is fairly linear, in Chapter 2 you will find yourself in the open world outside the mega-metropolis of Midgar. After a while, our main characters realize that they have to come up with something if they want to continue their search for the villain Sephiroth. In their search for a potential solution, they stumble across a small farm that also has chocobos!
The current bosses of the family business tell you that one of their chocobos has escaped. As a real all-rounder, this of course can't scare our protagonist Cloud and so he goes bird hunting. As soon as you arrive at Piko's whereabouts, a small mini-game begins, which you will have to play more often in the course of your long journey, albeit in a slightly different form.
However, the core of these “hunting sections” does not change: you are shown your target in a short tracking shot. Then you have to somehow sneak up on the Chocobo unseen and surprise it from behind. It is important to avoid the gaze of other freely roaming Chocobos. To do this in “Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth”, use tall grass or tall objects as cover or distract the birds with stones.

As soon as you are exactly behind the target chocobo, all you have to do is press the triangle button to jump onto the ratite's back. Now you can ride it and easily explore the open world of the action RPG. Or more precisely: part of the open game world. In fact, a tamed Chocobo is only available to you in the open-world area in which you caught it. So you have to grab several Chocobos.
In “Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth” you will not only find the iconic yellow Chocobos, but also birds whose feathers have taken on a different color. One reason for this is that they have adapted to their respective habitat. For example, gray chocobos have become accustomed to life in mountainous regions, while blue chocobos live by the sea. Of course you can also swim on the latter.
But why should you bother looking for chocobos in the open world sections? The good news is: You usually don't have to do this to complete the story. So if you just want to experience the exciting story of the action RPG, you can safely ignore the Chocobo hunt. However, if you want to explore every corner of the open world, you can't avoid looking for and taming the big birds.

Especially in the later stages of “Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth”, there are always areas in the game world that you can only reach with a Chocobo. There are often various optional side tasks hidden in these areas, for completing which you will receive useful rewards. In particular, your friend Chadley, who you may already know from “Final Fantasy 7 Remake”, needs support again with his extensive research.
