Matthew Perry's official account on Xu (formerly Twitter) has been hacked, and those who did it asked for donations from fans of the late actor.
The post, which has since been removed from Perry's account, asked for cryptocurrency donations to support the Matthew Perry Foundation's mission to fight addiction.
The foundation that allegedly signed the tweet was actually founded after the actor's death and its mission is to fight for better treatment of addiction.
However, the Matthew Perry Foundation warned that the post was fake and told followers not to share the fake plea on social media and reminded them to donate only through the official website matthewperryfoundation.org.
It is unclear how the fraudsters managed to hijack the account of the actor known for his role as Chandler Bing in the TV sitcom “Friends”, but it can be assumed that the password for the account was stolen by someone who now has control of the account, either through phishing or using malware, but it is also possible that did Perry make a mistake while he was alive and use the same password for his Twitter account and for some other accounts.
Famous people's social media accounts are always attractive to fraudsters, even after their death. So Matthew Perry's X account, for example, is still followed by more than 1.5 million people.
Perry, 54, died at his home in Los Angeles in October 2023, after a long battle with addiction.
