This week it was reported that Embracer Group is close to selling Gearbox Software. As Kotaku claims to have learned, the cost-cutting measures that Embracer initiated in 2023 also affected the Texas development studio's projects.
This year, the Embracer Group, which has fallen into financial difficulties, is rigorously continuing its austerity measures. Measures that recently resulted in the loss of hundreds of jobs.
In addition, according to current reports, the sale of the Texas development studio Gearbox Software is imminent. If the information provided by various insiders corresponds to the facts, then the sale of the studio will be officially announced this month. But how did the savings announced last year and the impending sale of Gearbox Software affect the studio's projects?
As Kotaku reports, citing two sources familiar with the matter, the development that Embracer Group has undergone in recent months has also led to a creative shakeup at Gearbox Software.
Accordingly, Gearbox developers postponed work on “exciting new brands” in 2023 to focus on completing “Borderlands 4”.
What about Borderlands 4 & Tiny Tina's Wonderland 2?
The sources cited by Kotaku also pointed out that the uncertainty caused by Embracer Group's financial difficulties was also felt at Gearbox Software. Among other things, various executives are said to have decided to leave the studio because of this.
“A sequel to Borderlands 3 has seen some shakeup within its leadership team as Gearbox tries to get it over the finish line. At the same time, a sequel to Tiny Tina's Wonderlands received a soft reboot. Sources tell Kotaku that both projects are still very promising and progressing well,” Kotaku said.
“However, the upheaval contributed to feelings of insecurity on the studio floor. 'We have lost senior staff because of this situation,' claimed another developer.”
So far, Gearbox Software has not officially announced either “Borderlands 4” or “Tiny Tina's Wonderland 2”. However, in the last few days there have been increasing indications that the unveiling of “Borderlands 4” could take place as part of PAX East 2024. This year the event will take place from March 21st to 24th, 2024.
The successor to “Tiny Tina's Wonderland” appeared on the resume of a technical director at Gearbox Software at the end of 2023. In addition, studio CEO Randy Pitchford promised in September 2022 that we can look forward to more “Tiny Tina's Wonderland” games.
However, he didn't get any more specific.
