The president of Anatel, Carlos Baigorri, said he was happy with the news of Honor's likely entry into the national market. This movement, recently revealed, points to Brazil as the last frontier to be conquered by the Chinese company in Latin America.
The information comes from the Tecnoblog portal, in an interview with the executive during MWC. In conversation, Baigorri highlighted his satisfaction with this perspective and criticized the current market concentration. He noted that Brazilian consumers only have three main smartphone options — Samsung, Apple and Motorola. Meanwhile, big companies like OPPO, Vivo and Huawei present highly competitive products at MWC, but never reach Brazil.
Baigorri emphasized the importance of increasing competition in the Brazilian smartphone market to provide consumers with more options. He mentioned the presence of several renowned brands at MWC, such as Xiaomi, Redmi, Honor, Huawei, Oppo and Vivo, which are not available in Brazil.
When asked about the possibility of lower prices with the entry of new manufacturers, Baigorri stated that a more competitive market would certainly result in more affordable smartphones. He even mentioned a project involving Qualcomm that could result in a 5G phone priced at $99.

Although he recognizes the quality of smartphones offered by Samsung, Apple and Motorola, Baigorri highlighted that the lack of diversity of options in the Brazilian market limits consumers' choices. He compared the situation to a restaurant with just three dishes on the menu, suggesting that while the dishes may be quality, the variety is limited.
The president of Anatel highlighted the high market concentration, citing Samsung as the leader in number of units sold, followed by Motorola, while Apple stands out in revenue due to the higher prices of its smartphones.
