Advertising is coming soon to Amazon Prime Video, and if you don't want it, you'll have to cough it up (or stop your subscription).
Pay to avoid advertising. Again
According to BFMTV, whose information is taken over by Capital, advertising will arrive among Amazon Prime Video subscribers in France next month, more precisely on April 9, 2024. Already present across the Atlantic since the beginning of the year, it therefore crosses borders like a bird of ill omen.
Let us be very clear, we are not talking here about a free offer with advertising, allowing anyone to discover the platform's catalog without paying a euro in exchange for a few advertisements to watch. No, these are spots that are added even if you already pay for your subscription. If you do not want to view these ads, you will have to pay 1.99 euros more per month, which means that the offer at 6.99 euros increases to almost 9 euros. Capital reminds that even if you select the most expensive offer, certain advertisements will still be present. The site also points out that this follows decisions taken by Netflix and Disney+, which have been allowing advertising for some time now.
Ever more expensive SVOD platforms
How far will SVOD platforms go to improve their margins? In fact, we have been seeing regular increases in subscriptions for several years. Of course, on Amazon's side, there are still the arguments of free and faster deliveries, or Prime Day/Prime Gaming events. But at what point will subscribers judge that this is no longer enough to pay more and more?
In the United States, American users filed a collective complaint in Washington. As we mentioned in this article, what is disturbing about this story is that many customers have already paid for their Prime subscription for the year. And this change occurs right in the middle of the subscription period. It is on this very precise point that the plaintiffs intend to beat Amazon, explaining that the latter would have failed in its contractual obligations and would have broken the contract, at the same time. It is also rumored that Netflix would still like to add additional advertising despite the increasing price increases…
