It's now been seven long years that the Crunchyroll platform has been showcasing the many animated films and series released over the months, but not only that! The artists and creatives behind these projects are also celebrated. During the past year, we were able to discover new works as well as new episodes of series particularly praised by anime fans. Jujutsu Kaisen crushes all other anime: almost 1 out of 3 awards goes to it in season 2!
Let’s start first with the anime that received the best award of the evening, namely the title “ Anime of the year “. Given the tidal wave caused by the launch of the second season, it is not surprising to see that it was Jujutsu Kaisen who left with this coveted statuette. The adaptation of Akutami Gege's manga was not satisfied with this single prize since he got his hands on no less than ten different categories (best character design, best novelty, best opening, best ending, best direction, best secondary character, best action, best actor (JP), best actor (VF), best actor (PT)). However, there were other animes that did not stand out, like Chainsaw Man (6 rewards) and Demon Slayer (3 rewards).
As we have said, competition was tough in 2023, and even some big names in Japanese animation failed to compete and had to settle for a few crumbs. In the lot, we find One Piece (2 prizes, best main character (Luffy) and best sequel), the attack of the Titans (2 prizes also, best original soundtrack and best drama), or even Spy x Family (2 prizes also, most endearing character (Anya Forger) and best comedy). One of the great forgotten ones of the ceremony is Oshi No Ko who leaves only with the prize for Best Anime Song. That being said, we can applaud the success of other names such as Buddy Daddies (best original creation), Bocchi the Rock! (best novelty), Horimiya : The Missing Pieces (best romance) and Suzume (best film).
