Two of the most curious peripherals for the Nintendo Famicom are put to the test here. This is Famicom 3D System and ROB The Robot, a 3D viewer and interactive robot launched in Japan!
Welcome back to Uncle Bruno's storiesthe Hobby Consoles section in which we review great video games and consoles of the past! This time, we travel to Japan to show you two true rarities for the Famicom, Nintendo's legendary console.
Thanks to the loan from the friends of Chollo Games (the iconic retro video game store located in Arenal street, 8, Madrid), we can show you two very curious products from the 80s.
On the one hand, we have ROB the Robot, a peripheral launched in the US and Japan, which was a kind of robot capable of reacting and moving according to what was shown on the television, thanks to certain special cartridges in the console. The peripheral wasn't even linked to the Famicom in any way, it just reacted to impulses from the TV. It's cool!
On the other hand, we have Famicom 3D System, a viewer far ahead of its time, which allowed you to enjoy three-dimensional effects with the few compatible games that were released. It provided a very convincing “shutter” effect on its lenses, as Bruno Sol himself will see in the video that heads this content.
It's a shame that an equivalent viewer was not launched in Europe, because to enjoy the effect we need a CRT TV (a traditional “tube”, that is), that can display the NTSC video signal from the console well. If you have a large Trinitron, it could work for you.
Now that we have been able to see in detail what ROB The Robot and Famicom 3D System are like…of what others retro video games or consoles Would you like us to talk in future installments of The Stories of Uncle Bruno? Leave your suggestions in the comments below and we will return every Saturday to comment on them… Whether in two or three dimensions.
