The surprise launch of EA's classic games on Steam made many fans happy but, at the same time, caused serious damage (albeit indirect) to Potions A Curious Talean indie video game in development for ten years.
In a touching video that is making the rounds on social media, the developer of Potions A Curious Tale Renee Gittens she appears visibly upset by learning that the day one of the title into which she has poured all her creative energies over the last ten years would have been ruined by the simultaneous arrival on Steam of well 11 classic video games from Electronic Arts.
The author of this role-playing adventure explains that she carefully chose the marketing date of Potions A Curious Tale to carve out a corner of visibility in the sea of titles that appear daily on Valve's platform (with 14,000 games arriving on Steam in 2023). The surprise arrival of EA's classics on Steam, consequently, forced his project to immediately leave the list of 'New and Trending' titles on the digital store most frequented by PC gamers.
It is Gittens herself who tells what happened and explains, with all the bitterness that we can perceive from her words, that “developing is hell, do you want to know why? Because you work for ten years on a project, choose a launch date that you think is fantastic, make sure everyone is enthusiastic about what you're doing, you dedicate yourself to marketing and then you find yourself fighting against those, like EA, who decide to launch 11 games in one go, thus cutting you off from the list of New and Trending video games despite the good reviews and the interest shown by the community.”
At the time of writing, the message shared by the creator of Potions A Curious Tale has surpassed the 4 million total views and is fueling a heated debate on social media: many say they are sorry for what happened to the developer, but there is no shortage of comments from those who urge her to be 'more pragmatic' and from those who, out of who knows what feeling of revenge, go so far as to ask her to 'don't complain'. In our small way, we can only stand in solidarity with Renee Gittens and contribute to her cause by giving visibility to her indie project: here you will find the link to the Potions A Curious Tale Steam page, complete with Free downloadable demo to try out the role-playing adventure.
