The companies SMIC and CXMT are considered leaders in their fields of activity in China: the first is engaged in the contract production of chips for various purposes, and the second specializes in the production of RAM chips. According to Taiwanese media, former SMIC executive vice president for development Zhou Meisheng recently joined CXMT.
At his new place of work, the SMIC veteran will also oversee research and development activities, but only in relation to the production of RAM chips. It is known that CXMT recently purchased a batch of equipment for the production of multi-level HBM memory, although technically it is not yet ready for its production. The purchase was made in advance to protect the company from possible US sanctions, the introduction of which is already being discussed on the other side of the ocean.
Zhou Meisheng left SMIC back in 2022 after five years as executive vice president. Before joining SMIC, she held various positions at Chartered Semiconductor and TSMC, and also headed the Chinese office of Lam Research, a US chip manufacturing equipment supplier. Ms. Meisheng is a Singaporean citizen and was educated in China and the United States.
In addition to claims to produce HBM type memory, the Chinese company CXMT intends to use a transistor structure with a surrounding gate when producing memory chips, which, in the plans of foreign chip manufacturers, is adjacent to 3-nm and 2-nm technical processes. Apparently, Zhou Meisheng will have to bring all these ambitions of CXMT to life. In November last year, the company reported the release of the first LPDDR5 chips developed in China. Founded only in 2016, the CXMT company has achieved good success in the RAM market in its homeland, and in the context of tightening sanctions, big bets are placed on it not only by its Chinese partners, but also by the authorities.
