Mat Piscatella, Circana analyst (ex NPD Group) predicts a tough year in terms of expenses and revenues in the video game market in North Americawith consumers expected to spend less than last year.
Specifically, Piscatella foresees in the best case scenario a global expenditure for video games, consoles and accessories 2% lower than in 2023a drop that in the worst case scenario, in his opinion, could reach up to 10%.
There are many reasons, 2024 seems to be a very uncertain year from the point of view of releases, with no big hits to drive sales. Palworld and Helldivers 2 were released in the first months of the yearhugely successful games but not comparable to Hogwarts Legacy, capable of selling over 24 million copies in 2023 alone.
And with GTA 6 and Nintendo Switch 2 due out no earlier than 2025, the situation for the market doesn't look rosy. And let's not forget that Sony itself has announced that it won't launch any blockbusters for PS5 this year. It is true, there are third party games like EA Sports FC, Call of Duty and Assassin's Creed Codename Red arriving at the end of the year, but will they be enough to guarantee profits for retailers?
