IDC published a report based on its research into the global desktop and laptop market last year. Analysts estimate that PC shipments in 2023 are down 8.8% from 2022 levels. The result was the second-biggest percentage drop since IDC began tracking the market in 2008.
Despite the decline in deliveries for the entire 2023, the situation began to stabilize in the middle of the year, and in the fourth quarter, supply volumes even increased by 6.1% compared to the same period in 2022. “2023 was undoubtedly a difficult year in many ways, but we ended the year with some positives and hope for a better future,” said IDC analyst Jay Chou.
The analyst believes that the successful last quarter, along with a number of other factors, point to an impending market recovery, which will be more noticeable in the second half of 2024. In the long term, this will be facilitated, for example, by the approaching end of the life cycle of Windows 10, support for which will end in the fall of 2025. Organizations around the world will have to switch to Windows 11, which means that computer purchases will increase. The appearance on the market of devices with new processors, especially those optimized for performing artificial intelligence tasks, and graphics accelerators will also stimulate growth in demand for computers.
Dell continues to be the leader in the supply of computers to the global market. Despite a slight decrease in the company's PC shipments in the fourth quarter of 2023 relative to the same period in 2022, the vendor remained the segment leader throughout the entire 12-month period. Following the leader is HP, which managed to significantly increase supplies in the fourth quarter of 2023. Rounding out the top three is Lenovo, whose share jumped 11% in the fourth quarter.
IDC forecasts that PC shipments will grow 5.2% in 2024. The positive dynamics are expected to continue in 2025. Analysts believe that in 2025, PC shipments in the global market will grow by another 7.9%. Growth is expected to slow down towards the end of 2025, when the transition to Windows 11 will come to an end.
