The new story linked to NieR Automata that is told to us by Square Enix with the manga YoRHa – Assault on Pearl Harbor expands the universe of Yoko Taro's action role-playing odyssey and makes fans' anticipation for NieR 3 even more frantic.
With the latest volume proposed to us by the Japanese publisher and developer, the creative team following Yoko Taro helps us to shed light on YoRHa units and A2's pastthus giving us the perfect starting point to reflect on the future of this now iconic intellectual property and, with it, on the playful, narrative and purely graphic prospects of the third 'major' chapter of the series.
The enthusiasm of fans for NieR, on the other hand, has never waned, just look at the many debates that crowd the pages of the forums most frequented by fans of the series and the interest aroused by every single move made on social media by Yoko Taro as the possible teaser for NieR 3 shared at the end of February on Twitter/X. What should we expect from the next act of this beloved action RPG epic, then?
The creative path undertaken by Taro himself with projects such as NieR Replicant and NieR Reincarnation suggests a relatively innovative – and in some ways surprising – approach in aspects such as combat system and the progression of the activities to be carried out, as well as the innovations (even disruptive ones) on the subject of character development and 'narrative construction'understood as the evolution of the story and the infinite branches made possible by the events experienced by the heroes of the previous chapters of the series.
Without going into the merits of the plot of the past chapters so as not to expose spoilers and venture predictions which, knowing the good Yoko Taro, would be completely useless, let's therefore try to concentrate on the gameplay to hypothesize a greater freedom in choosing the activities to carry outperhaps inside freely explorable macro-areas and full of challenges and missions that span the most diverse gaming genres.
Furthermore, for a series that makes replayability and constant 'changes of pace' two of its sharpest weapons, it is impossible not to consider NieR 3 in a broader framework that takes into account, for example, the opportunities offered by the latest generation SSDs and the most advanced technologies to give us an even more kaleidoscopic adventure on the screen, with many interconnected environments which allow almost instant access to an even denser web of fights, platform sessions and free roaming phases alternating with more role-playing situations and more 'linear' cinematic experiences.
Who will be entrusted with the leading role? Will it be a sequel or a prequel? What surprises will the plot reserve for us? In this area it is really difficult to distinguish between the community's most imaginative conjectures and the most credible and realistic theories. While waiting to find out what's cooking around Yoko Taro's studio, we invite you to let us know with a comment what your expectations are for NieR 3 and, in case you missed it, we remind you that on the shores of Everyeye.it find our review of NieR Replicant.
