The developers of Playtron, the company behind PlaytronOS, a new dedicated gaming operating system that is supposed to bring all gaming platforms from Windows to Linux, are going out on a limb and want to develop the better SteamOS by 2025. This “gaming distribution” is primarily intended to address the flourishing market of handheld PCs such as the Steam Deck.

PlaytronOS is supposed to be the better SteamOS
With PlaytronOS, Playtron hopes to become the Linux-based operating system for games on handhelds, desktops, notebooks, televisions and cars in the long term, according to the official website. For this purpose, a “better SteamOS” is promised, which is not inherently “limited to Steam”.
We're building a lightweight gaming operating system optimized for a new generation of powerful handheld gaming PCs… and beyond. Play all your games from any store… Steam… Epic and many more.

It should be mentioned here, however, that SteamOS is by no means “limited” to Steam, although it is not surprising that Valve also delivers its operating system on its handheld PC with its game distribution platform and tailors it to it. The developers promise that PlaytronOS will take a different approach here.
SteamOS and Windows are said to be unsuitable
The company behind PlaytronOS is approaching its project very aggressively and will have to be measured by its words. For example, the website states that SteamOS and Windows are “unsuitable for handheld PCs”, but PlaytronOS is supposed to do better as a result. Players can be curious to see what approach Playtron will choose for its gaming OS.
Playtron has nothing to show yet
So far, Playtron and its potential gaming operating system PlaytronOS have nothing to show. The official website does not yet provide any indication of what the Linux distribution will ultimately look like or on what basis it will be built. Currently, many (or rather all) questions remain unanswered.
A Linux-based gaming operating system that is compatible with every major gaming distribution platform and many future third-party integrations.

A first (preview) version of PlaytronOS for the Steam Deck and other handheld PCs is scheduled to appear later this year, before the official market launch is scheduled for next year. The makers have already invited people to an event where more about PlaytronOS will be presented in more detail. PCGH is present and will report on this event accordingly.
