Rainbow Six Siege was released on December 1, 2015. While other games with a live service model can be happy to survive the first few months, the tactical shooter has more users than ever before in its ninth year. The new record of players logged in at the same time on Steam as of last weekend is 201,933 (via SteamDB). The success of the title is all the more astonishing because publisher Ubisoft regularly hits the wall with other games-as-a-service – Skull and Bones can currently tell a thing or two about it.
Why is Rainbow Six Siege so successful?
When looking for the reason for the popularity of Rainbow Six Siege (buy now for €7.99), you initially come across a fairly simple explanation on the surface. Ubisoft has repeatedly offered the title free to play for limited periods of time. In addition, the price regularly drops into the single-digit range during sales. But since this has been the case for years, there must be a deeper reason.

On the one hand, Rainbow Six Siege is simply fun for many players. A title must therefore have a certain quality. And of course the success of a GaaS model depends on the implementation of the live service elements. The developers are still delivering new content (Year 9 Season 1 launched earlier this month) without overwhelming or ripping off players. Many users seem to take a break and come back for a new season.
On the other hand, influencers play a much larger role in live games than, for example, in a single-player game with a classic campaign. According to PC Gamer, the biggest streamer on Twitch right now, Jynxzi, only plays Siege. His visit to the Rainbow Six Invitational 2024 gave the event more attention than ever before. And as long as this trend continues, there probably won't be a Rainbow Six Siege 2.
