A report from one of Destiny 2's most popular content creators has revealed the alleged atmosphere that would exist between Sony and Bungie after the purchase of the veteran development studio.
Sony bought a while ago Bungie. This was one of the most important moves within the industry for the company that includes PlayStation and many saw the acquisition as a “counterattack!” after the million-dollar purchases that Microsoft had made.
Since Bungie has become part of PlayStation We have not had any great news about their collaboration. It is true that Destiny 2: Into the Light has already been announced and that Marathon is in development, but there is not much more to comment after some reports from last year.
In December 2023 we already mentioned that Bungie employees feared that Sony would take control of the company and that morale was at rock bottom. After this, now emerge new alleged details about the relationship of both companies.
Problems between Bungie and Sony?
And we say “assumed” because the following information comes from Aztecross, one of the largest content creators in Destiny 2who has shared an anonymous email he recently received detailing the internal conflict between Sony and Bungie.
According to this creator and his source of information, “Sony's internal outlook is very negative towards Bungie at this time. It is considered a failed investment and the strategies being discussed revolve around recovering losses.”
The report mentions that From Sony they see that there are many “gluttonous” executives at Bungie who are not doing their job and they are hindering the organization of the company. The problem would fall on the studio's management leadership, not the workers.
“Overall, Sony has been very upset with Bungie's leadership. They have been unable to successfully advise the Sony teams, and while Lightfall met its internal revenue goals, not all targets have since been met due to a ever-increasing decline,” reads the official Reddit post.
A possible intervention by Sony in the Bungie model would involve changes in Destiny 2 trying to make the game more profitable. The content creator notes that “Sony wants to nurture the game and understands that more aggressive monetization would not be healthy.”
A change has been proposed, although it has not been decided how drastic this measure will be, since supposedly Sony's American and Japanese teams would be fighting to see who leads Bungie.
It is mentioned that if Japan gains control, the plans of Destiny's creators could be radically modified.
Of course, this report is not official, so we will have to take it as a rumor. We will be very attentive to any information, although the problems are not new. We remember that the decline of Destiny 2 was what caused massive layoffs at Bungie.
