Founder and head of Larian Studios Swen Vincke, during a speech at the GDC 2024 conference, clarified the studio's plans for the further development of Baldur's Gate 3 and the franchise as a whole.
Let us remember that shortly after the release of Baldur's Gate 3 from early access, Vincke admitted the possibility of releasing a paid expansion for the game, but noted that its development was fraught with a number of design difficulties.
During GDC 2024, Vincke confirmed that, contrary to the expectations of players, Larian still does not plan to release any addons or DLC for Baldur's Gate 3, and is also not going to take on the development of a potential Baldur's Gate 4.
Vincke doesn’t care who will take on the sequel to Baldur’s Gate: “Wizards of the Coast, because this is their franchise, will have to find someone to pass the banner. We've done our job and it's time for us to get a new puppy.”
“Like Gustav, Baldur's Gate will remain in our hearts. We will always be proud of it, but we will not continue it… We will move on. Let's leave (Dungeons & Dragons) behind and start making a new game,” Vincke said.
In January, Vincke said that he had already decided what the first act of his new game would be, and added: “It’s not what you think, and it’s not an announcement teaser.” Whatever the studio does, it won't be Baldur's Gate.
“We are a company of big ideas. Our company was not created to develop DLC or addons. We tried several times and always failed. It's none of our business. Life is too short. Our ambitions are too great,” concluded Vincke.
