Just a few days ago, the first players of Helldivers 2 reported strange flying beetles that would attack in swarms and cause a lot of damage. However, this was dismissed on social media by Johan Pilestedt, the CEO of Arrowhead Studios, as “lies” and “propaganda from beetle sympathizers”. “Everyone knows that beetles can’t fly,” Pilestedt wrote about the sightings. Now the head of the studio is taking a new tone and making it clear that he always believed that flying beetles could exist.
Ministry of Truth has already had to confirm flying beetle
With Helldivers 2, the developers at Arrowhead Studios not only rely on a game master like in tabletop role-playing games, but also on a meta-narrative that is continued in the real world. At the beginning of the week, the fictional “Ministry of Truth” had to officially announce the “surprising” mutation of the flying beetles that the players reported. Pilestedt also responded to this and apparently also changed his mind about the creatures.

“Regarding the Mo-Int report on a new, previously unseen, flying beetle: I want to be clear: I have always believed in the possibility of flying beetles,” Pilestedt recently tweeted. “Everyone knows that 'most beetles fly,' and it was only a matter of time before this strain would evolve naturally.” However, the CEO dismissed the theory that the flying creatures could have mutated as a result of the super-Earth spraying poison gas on the border planet controlled by the Terminids as “completely coincidental and unrelated.” “9/9 reputable and super-Earth-sanctioned scientists agree.”
The Flying Shriekers now appear as a random side objective in Terminid missions on medium to high difficulty. However, the players have already set their sights on a new goal. The recent earthquakes are seen as the possible appearance of a Hive Lord, a giant sandworm that users already know from Helldivers 1.
