According to recent reports, Microsoft could be working on a native Xbox handheld. Windows Central's Jez Corden would like to have found out this and speaks of new prototypes that do not have a cloud solution.
At the beginning of February we received the news that Microsoft disappointing sales figures will stick to Xbox hardware despite the Xbox Series X/S.
Additionally, Windows Central’s Jez Corden reported that “Microsoft green light for further hardware projects”. According to Corden, there will also be a possible Xbox handheld. While Xbox boss Phil Spencer asked about a potential handheld in February rather evasive answered, Corden followed up again in a recent report.
According to the Windows Central editor, Microsoft is indeed said to be working on an Xbox handheld. What's interesting in this context is that Corden would like to hear about a standalone handheld. This is intended to enable players to play their titles natively on their handheld – without a cloud solution.
Is the handheld in the prototype phase?
As Corden added in the “Xbox Two” podcast, the handheld is currently in the prototype phase. As the podcast continued, Corden pointed out that his statements were based on new prototypes and not on the hardware that was rumored in the past.
However, Corden could not or did not want to give any further details. Therefore, it remains to be seen when the official announcement of an Xbox handheld can be expected. Of course, always assuming that one of the prototypes is actually ready for series production.
Last month, Sarah Bond, the president of the Xbox division, announced that Microsoft is planning “more exciting hardware” and would like to make an announcement in the winter.
Bond talks about exciting news
Bond in February: “We have more up our sleeves. There are some exciting new hardware releases we'll be unveiling this Christmas. We are also investing in the next generation roadmap.”
“What we're really focused on is delivering the biggest technical leap you've ever seen in a hardware generation, making it better for gamers and better for the creators and the visions they create.”
The rumor mill was further fueled by the legal dispute between Microsoft and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Confidential documents from Microsoft were leaked here, in which… various new projects the speech was. In addition to a purely digital version of the Xbox Series X and a revised Xbox controller, a possible Xbox handheld also appeared here.
However, these projects have not yet been officially confirmed.
