Since March 21, 2024, PC players have also been able to enjoy Horizon Forbidden West. The PC port includes the complete edition of the second offshoot of the Horizon series, which was released in February 2022 for PS4 and PS5, so the Burning Shores expansion is included. Although the graphics quality of the PC version is superior to the console edition (assuming the appropriate hardware is available), as the report linked below shows, for some users that doesn't go far enough – accordingly, the first mods for Horizon Forbidden West can already be found online.
Horizon Forbidden West: How good is the PC version? [Bericht]
Basically, these modifications all use the tool called Reshade, which has been available in version 6.0 since the beginning of the year and functions as a post-processing injector. With the help of Reshade, presets can be initialized, which contain presets for shaders and their parameters and thus improve the graphics quality.
In the context of Horizon Forbidden West, it seems that the main search is for modifications that remove the yellowish color cast, as a look at the currently most popular PC mods on the Nexusmods portal shows. A literally simple download for this is the mod called “Simple Color Fix”. The reshade pack called “Visual Enchanced” (sic!) goes one step further, which, in addition to removing the yellow tone, also aims to make the environments a little more “tropical and “more realistic”. For owners of HDR monitors, the reshade preset called “Project Forbidden West – HDR FX” is available, which promises “precise lighting effects with limited performance losses”.
