The closure of both studios will hit Netflix’s gaming business hard.
Streaming giant Netflix is basically trying to gain a foothold in gaming, but those efforts are now suffering setbacks. It’s no secret that the company is closing two of its own development studios. Night School and Moonlight Booty were affected.
Night School has just released Unhinged, a 30-minute narrative horror game starring a cast that includes Sadie Sink, Zoe Kravitz, and Troy Baker. Before that, the studio rose to fame 10 years ago with the indie hit Oxenfree. With the evening school about to close, that’s all over.
The second affected studio is Helsinki-based Moonloot, but this is still not the case. Other in-house studio positions will also be cut. However, it’s unclear how many employees will be put out on the streets.
The studio closure comes amid Netflix’s new focus on children’s games, party games and story-based content. Generally speaking, you want to focus more on games that have mainstream potential. “We see opportunities to make our implementation more focused and are making organizational changes across the business to reflect these priorities,” a Netflix spokesperson said.
