If you’re considering buying a Nintendo Switch 2, you probably shouldn’t spend too much time on it. Nintendo has officially confirmed that the popular hybrid console will see a significant price increase from September 1, 2026. The move marks the first official price adjustment for the device since its hugely successful launch in June last year. While the price in the US climbs from $449.99 to $499.99, players in Europe and Canada will also have to bear a corresponding surcharge.



In Europe, the console’s suggested retail price has increased by 30 euros to 469.99 euros. This unpopular but economically necessary move is justified due to severe bottlenecks in the semiconductor market, significant increases in the cost of DRAM memory components, and generally changing market conditions, which according to Nintendo are likely to continue in the medium to long term. The Japanese domestic market has been affected by this wave for a long time, and comparable price increases will be implemented starting in May 2026. To make Western customers aware of the approaching deadline, the company used a tactic rarely seen in the industry, proactively posting warnings on the screens of demo stations in major electronics stores.

Potential buyers will be notified directly on the viewing station screens that the suggested retail price will increase in a few weeks. So if you’re on the fence anyway and want to buy a new system for your upcoming blockbuster, this kind of transparent communication will give you a strong incentive to get ahead and get the device at its original starting price. With this kind of customer-friendly lead time, Nintendo clearly differentiates itself from rivals like Sony, which has implemented and communicated similar price changes to the PlayStation 5 in shorter timeframes in the past.

Another factor that makes waiting until the fall less attractive from a financial perspective is the expiration of attractive hardware packages. So far, buyers have been able to benefit from limited-time bundles featuring high-profile games such as Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong Banana or Pokopia as free digital downloads. With the September 1 deadline, not only will these lucrative promotions disappear from shelves, but future customers will have to pay new, higher prices for the bare metal without any additional cost.

Despite the price increase, demand for the console is likely to remain very high, especially given the important Christmas business. The lineup of games over the next few months is huge and promises to bring some real highlights, which should further boost sales figures. In addition to the upcoming releases of “Fire Emblem: Weave of Fortune” and “Switch Sports Resort”, the highly anticipated new version of “The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time” will also be released at the end of this year. Heavyweight games such as “Xenoblade Genesis”, “Pokemon Winds” and “Pokemon Waves” have already been announced for 2027.
