The YouTube team announced a transition to a unified standard for counting views across all video formats on the platform. Starting August 24, 2026, views will be counted exactly when the video starts playing (from the first frame).
Previously, the service used different rating systems for traditional movies and Shorts, causing confusion for content creators. This innovation will eliminate these differences and make statistics clearer. Meanwhile, the usual “engaged views” metric will remain in advanced analytics mode so authors can track the depth of audience retention.
The company emphasized that the change will not affect authors’ earnings or terms of participation in the YouTube Partner Program. Earnings will still be calculated based on engaged views and watch time, and access requirements will simply change to “Qualified views” and “Qualified time.” With this new approach, overall channel views will begin to grow faster, helping creators better measure their impact when working with brands and sponsors.
