Woman enters data into menstruation app

Do you use apps to track your menstrual cycle? Then your private information may be shared without your knowledge. Privacy watchdog the Dutch Data Protection Authority (AP) has called on users to exercise restraint when sharing information in apps.

Period apps like Flo and Clue allow women to track their menstrual cycles and pregnancies. For example, this could be done by filling in the time their period started, the complaints they experienced, and the time they had sex. This can provide insight into the course of your cycle and when you ovulate.

Data must not be collected unless permission is granted

This is quite personal data, but there is no way of knowing what it will be used for. The Associated Press puts it this way: “These apps collect large amounts of very personal data. This involves special personal data that must receive additional protection under the law.”

In principle, apps are not allowed to collect this data unless someone explicitly gives permission, for example in the general terms and conditions. “In practice, it is unclear whether these apps share this information with advertising partners, etc., and whether users are properly informed of this.”

Therefore, AP recommends that you double-check the permissions you grant when installing an app. “Please do not share information you want to keep private if the information is unclear or, for example, if you do not have the option to decline sharing the data.”

Vulnerable status of women and girls

AP Vice President Monique Verdier specifically warned against using free apps. “Because with free apps you usually ‘pay’ with your data. In this case you get information about when you had sex or when you were overdue.” She found the status of girls and women “vulnerable”. “They record a lot of private information in these apps. This makes them vulnerable. For example, when this sensitive information inadvertently falls into the hands of advertisers.”

Criminals are also feared. “Your data can end up in the hands of hackers. These criminals target the most sensitive personal data because they can use it to blackmail people.”

Does not rule out further research into menstrual apps

The Associated Press said it would keep a close eye on menstrual apps and did not rule out further investigation. This isn’t the first time these apps have been in the news. In March this year, a television program warned radar Also available for apps, with a similar message.

In the meantime, you can also take steps on your own. For example, apps must be able to demonstrate why particular personal data is collected and potentially shared. Menstrual apps must also be able to clearly indicate how they process personal data and inform app users in advance.

Under the General Data Protection Regulation, these applications are also required to adopt digital flexibility measures. For example, personal data must be better protected to prevent leaks.
