Experts predict that the next generation of Sony PlayStation and Microsoft Xbox game consoles may be released in 2027, but the memory chip crisis has given people reason to consider that they may be delayed. Even the head of Sony did not rule out the possibility of an extension.

Sony said in a recent interview that it has yet to set an exact release date for the PlayStation 6 wall street journal CEO of Japanese company Hiroki Totoki. There’s been a lot of talk about the upcoming console from reputable (albeit unofficial) sources, but Sony, like Microsoft, still hasn’t decided how to deal with rising memory prices. Back in March, rumors surfaced that Sony and Microsoft were planning to release next-generation consoles as early as 2027. Even AMD has confirmed that its chips for the new Xbox will be ready for mass production in 2027; Microsoft has stated the same deadline for its development kits.
But with data centers running AI systems still consuming large amounts of RAM and prices having increased fivefold since 2025, the question arises whether consoles released at this difficult time can keep prices below $1,000. Prices for current-gen consoles have already risen significantly, and the cost of PlayStation 6 components is quickly approaching that level.
Waiting out the memory crisis is not an option either. Most experts agree that nothing will change in 2027, but their opinions vary: Some think everything will get better in 2028, while others predict problems will not arise until the next decade. According to unofficial sources, Sony and Microsoft have decided on the features of future game consoles: AMD Zen 6 CPU, RDNA 5 graphics card and GDDR7 memory. Sony may release a portable device using the same architecture.
With the new set-top box, you can expect improved performance for ray tracing and path tracing tasks, while artificial intelligence upscaling technology will help improve image quality while reducing file size. According to reports, Microsoft’s Xbox Helix also supports PC games.
