An interview with Jeff Kaplan, who is currently leading the development of multiplayer shooter California Legends, has been posted on the MinnMax YouTube channel. Bloggers blitzed developers with a total of 213 questions. For your convenience, we have collected all the most interesting information and presented it in the form of a short summary.

  • California Legends is a first-person shooter with survival elements, not a classic MMO or deep simulation game. The story takes place around 1849 on the fictional island of California, completely isolated from the rest of the United States. Currently, servers can host up to 100 players, but in the foreseeable future the developers plan to add support for custom and private servers, including the ability to fine-tune the creation of pure PvE worlds without killing other players. Gameplay is affected by a strict time-of-day cycle, with daylight lasting exactly 50 minutes and the more dangerous night taking 10 minutes. A sophisticated dynamic weather system complements the atmosphere.
  • Progress on the server is strictly tied to monthly resets, during which the overall landscape of the island remains the same, but the locations of key attractions completely change. After each wipe, the player loses all ranch development progress, companies, and collected equipment, but all global skills and unlockables will remain with the character forever. Survival starts at the bottom, with the first building being a simple tent and the first weapon being a spear, but gradually players will be able to build powerful firearms such as bolt-action rifles and even, as the author wishes, assemble huge controllable airships.
  • Players have a lot of freedom in choosing where to build their personal ranches, but chaotic development across the entire map is prohibited, and other user-built structures are essentially impossible to destroy, making this project very different from games like Rust. Resource mining plays a vital role: survivors can hunt for gold and silver in their own custom mines and abandoned caves around the world, to which the realistic mechanics of dangerous collapse will soon be added. To grow the economy, you can create your own trading post to sell goods to others, and resource management is greatly simplified thanks to a well-thought-out storage system that saves players from spending hours sorting items into dozens of chests.
  • The combat system relies entirely on physical models of ballistic behavior, abandoning hit scanning mechanisms in favor of realistic bullet flight. The weapons themselves are crafted in the atmospheric style of the Wild West. The developers deliberately abandoned the barrel interference mechanism. Blizzard veteran Jeff Goodman is responsible for the design of the shooting arsenal, and he designed the gun depth to be the same as the heroes he previously created for Strike Force. Melee weapons, while present, become less effective later in the game. Survival is increasingly complicated by a variety of factors, including injuries from falls, risk of drowning, puncture wounds, and starvation, which can easily kill players off-screen, and future updates will introduce disease, snake bites, and healing doctors.
  • There are many kinds of animals in the game world, including eagles, bald eagles, California condors and the ever-bloodthirsty wolf, but the deadliest creature after humans is the bear. To travel around the world quickly, you have access to horses, whose death is a huge loss as resurrection is punished by a five-minute penalty, as well as carts, stagecoaches, an advanced parkour system, and even a parachute glider from the earliest stages. The developers have implemented swimming and fishing mechanics but have not yet added boats, and in the future they plan to introduce a full-fledged system for raising horses and the ability to have loyal pets.
  • Social interaction and role play are strongly encouraged. During testing, players instinctively communicated in a cowboy accent, used greeting gestures like touching their hats or the funny “Amigo” emoticon, and could pursue any career they chose. The world map is rich and varied, including 8 large, 20 medium, 50 small, and 250 micro points of interest, as well as 37 outposts and banks that serve as PvE cleanup gang lairs, but the game basically makes no use of flat 2D building facades. The game’s lore takes into account the historical influences of various cultures, including Mexican paraphernalia such as giant sombreros and carefully integrated Native American artifacts, and the world itself is filled with story notes and NPCs, although classic mission and crime detection systems are not yet available.
  • The development is being carried out by Kintsugiyama, a completely remote and independent studio led by Jeff Kaplan, who turned down extremely lucrative offers from other companies to create this massive sandbox of his dreams. The project still has at least two large alpha testing phases ahead of an early access release on both Steam and the Epic Games Store, with a console release only seen as a long-term prospect following success on PC. In the spirit of World of Warcraft and holiday events, the author will regularly release major content updates with new high-level challenges, but is determined to maintain a pragmatic atmosphere and flatly refuses to add aliens or giant mechanical spiders.

  9. Jeff Kaplan believes that World of Warcraft is the game with the best final game content.
  10. Jeff Kaplan considers Blizzard to be his favorite part of his past and history.
  11. After leaving Blizzard, Jeff Kaplan did receive offers to join other gaming projects. There are very attractive items in it.

The fourth phase of Alpha testing for California Legends will run from September 17th to September 21st.
