Recently, the media noticed that Compulsion Games is now listed as the publisher of “Midnight South” on Steam. It has since been officially confirmed that the studio has completed the separation process from Xbox. Guillaume Provost, director of the compulsory games, said interviewhe told some details about his separation from Microsoft:
- The deal was in the form of a studio manager buying out the studio. Terms were not disclosed.
- Microsoft has returned the rights to all its franchises and games to Compulsion Games. Now, proceeds from sales of studio projects will be donated directly to Compulsion Games.
- Provost said going independent was a better outcome than closing the studio. According to him, the main goal of the deal is to keep the team together. He said he had the following conversations with studio employees:
I made this deal mainly for the team. I asked the team, “Do you want to stay together?” The team responded that we would rather eat rocks and drink gasoline than be separated.
- After the possible closure was announced, some employees left the studio or began looking for new jobs. However, most of Compulsion Games’ top executives decided to stay. Provost did not disclose the exact number of employees at the studio.
- Now, Compulsion Games is continuing development on a project that has been in development since they were part of Xbox. The studio has yet to reveal plans for the new project. Management wants to select developments that will allow the team to become financially independent while maintaining the ability to create unusual and interesting projects.
- The provost is already in discussions with potential partners and exploring options for permanent funding.
Compulsion Games studio was founded in 2009. During this time, she successfully released 3 games – Contrast, We Happy Few and South of Midnight.
