At least, that’s the dynamic in year-to-year comparisons. The CPU market in the client sector grew by 9.4%, and in the server sector it grew by 8%. The structure of the client segment confirms the long-term transition to notebooks, as mobile processors accounted for 78% of shipments, while desktop processors accounted for only 22%. In comparison, the latter accounted for 29% of the client market a year ago, while the mobile market share did not exceed 71%.

Experts at Jon Peddie Research pointed out that client processor shipments continue to grow and exceed seasonal normal levels. Furthermore, CPU shipments in the second quarter usually don’t see any positive dynamics, as this is the time of year when market players typically clear product inventories generated last fall. As far as the server space is concerned, positive dynamics are ensured by the ongoing artificial intelligence boom, which is supported by Intel and AMD. The first was able to increase its share from 27% to 33.4% in one year, mainly due to the success of processors produced with the latest Intel 18A technology. Correspondingly, AMD’s share of the x86 server processor market fell from 73% to 67%, but in fact the company’s shipments and revenue increased in the second quarter.

As the study’s authors note, in Intel’s case, shipments increased more than usual as shortages arose in the first quarter and customers had to replenish inventory. The reason for the decline in client processor supply is rising memory prices. The most savvy PC gaming fans managed to update their systems and buy SSDs in the fourth quarter of last year. The delivery of Intel’s Panther Lake processors contributed to an increase in average selling prices and an increase in the company’s revenue in the client segment. The server market is characterized by an ongoing shortage of processors, sources said.
