Greta Gerwig’s new film adaptation of “The Chronicles of Narnia” is poised to become a major hit for Netflix and one of the most expensive projects in streaming history. According to director of photography Seamus McGarvey, the production budget of the film is approximately $280 million.
While the film didn’t cost as much as the fantasy action film “Electric State” ($320 million), it significantly exceeded the platform’s standard blockbuster price tag of $150-200 million.
The movie is scheduled to be released on February 12, 2027, coinciding with Super Bowl weekend. However, Netflix surprisingly gave the film 49 days of traditional theatrical exclusivity, which should help recoup the record investment. Audiences can expect a stellar cast (Meryl Streep, Daniel Craig, Emma McKay and Carey Mulligan), a PG rating, music by Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt, and a postwar 1950s setting. Meanwhile, additional filming was already underway at Shepparton Studios, which was rumored to be related to management’s dissatisfaction with the first test version of the cut.
