With its return to independent studio status After leaving Xboxhis team Fines Double Back to the starting point Relaunch of the Amnesia Fortnight Initiativewhich will effectively let fans vote on which game to develop among the many ideas presented.

Double Fine never fully abandoned the program, but during its time at Xbox Game Studios it was completely transformed into an initiative within the team, and now it’s said to be returning “to the public.”

Via an official press release, the studio announced an “independent reboot” with the relaunch of Amnesia Fortnight 2026, a documentary and a crowdfunding campaignthus signaling that it’s ready for a relaunch following its separation from Xbox Game Studios.

There will be Game Jams for new games

“We will hold a Game Jam live onlineDuring this period, our backers will be able to choose which of our countless ideas will be transformed into four new prototypes, and which of these four will become a real (small) game”, declares Double Fine, thus adopting the classic structure of the Amnesia Fortnight program.

The event will last over two weeks and developers will develop some game prototypes, document their workflow and articulate their ideas, and Users will then be able to vote for the most interesting projectsyou can reach the complete game state.

Prior to this, various other Double Fine games such as Costume Quest, Spacebase DF-9, and Headlander had sprung from the initiative, while in other cases ideas that emerged on these occasions were subsequently exploited in Psychonauts 2.

“Being independent again means we can go back and do a lot of the things we used to do, like crazy game jams, our usual two-week game jams where we break into groups and make a game in two weeks,” he explained Tim Shaferhead of Double Fine, on a recent episode of the Kindaunny podcast.

“After exiting the company, we have a little bit of leeway to sign some gaming deals. It’s a little scary to go out now. But it’s a runway, not a highway,” he explained.

Schaefer also confirmed All rights to Double Fine’s previous games returned to studio Future sales of such games will help support the company’s future.

“The intellectual property has been returned to us and we have regained the publishing rights for the games. Some of those games still have the Microsoft name on them because it took some time to complete the programs. When people buy our games, they directly support the studio”.

Double Fine laid off a quarter of its staff after ending its partnership with Microsoft, but it apparently plans to relaunch us soon.
