OpenAI began testing ads on the service in the United States back in February, before expanding the pilot program to eight additional markets within six months. The next phase of the platform’s international expansion will expand to 31 European countries, including Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands and Austria. According to the company, tens of thousands of advertisers currently use ChatGPT ads.
During the testing process, OpenAI expanded the scope of its advertising tools. In addition to the cost-per-thousand impressions (CPM) model, the platform now supports cost-per-click (CPC) and oCPC (optimized cost-per-click) payments for targeted actions. Geo-targeting, custom audience creation, and tools for measuring campaign results have also emerged, including OpenAI Pixel, Conversions API, and integration with third-party analytics systems.
OpenAI stated that ads on ChatGPT are clearly labeled and separate from service responses, and their placement does not affect the content of ChatGPT responses. The company plans to show ads in situations where users are researching and comparing products or services, as well as planning to make a purchase.
