Nearly thirty years after its original publication, Sanitarium is preparing to return in an updated edition. Ziggurat Interactive has indeed announced Nursing home enhancedis the new version of the famous graphic horror adventure game developed by DreamForge, which received recognition as Adventure Game of the Year in 1998 and managed to carve out its own fan base, who particularly appreciated its theme and atmosphere.
The one from before
The game retains the point-and-click structure and eerie atmosphere of the original, but introduces several improvements aimed at Adapt it to modern platforms. For the first time, full controller support is available, while widescreen resolutions can also be used during gameplay. The Steam Deck has also been specifically optimized and a series of changes have been made to the quality of the experience, including the possibility to change movement speed.
The protagonist of the story wakes up in an abandoned lunatic asylum, his appearance destroyed and his memory lost. He has no idea who he is or how he got there, and his escape from his cell is just the beginning of a journey through a series of nightmarish places. Between a village populated by deformed children, a mutated city, and a circus populated by monstrous creatures, the protagonist must gradually reconstruct his identity and learn the truth behind his situation.

Among the new additions to Sanitarium Enhanced Edition will be a Optional mode with hintsdesigned to facilitate identification of interactive elements and make exploration easier. The release will also include a library of bonus content featuring previously unreleased material from the original studio.
Ziggurat Interactive finally fixed some bugs and technical issues that were never resolved. The aim therefore seems to be to preserve the 1998 game by intervening in aspects that may not be readily available to the contemporary public.
Sanitarium Enhanced Edition will launch in 2026 on PS5, Xbox Series X and S, PS4, Nintendo Switch and PC.
