Anyone hoping to experience the next major chapter in The Witcher saga on PC and consoles in the near future will have to be a little more patient. As CD Projekt RED confirmed in its latest update ahead of Gamescom 2026, the studio is targeting 2028 for The Witcher 4’s official release window. In a message, co-CEO Michał Nowakowski addressed the global community directly, explaining the current situation and establishing a time frame. Even though the game is in full production, management is asking fans to give the team enough time to create a fully developed adventure game.
According to studio management, more than 500 developers are currently working on the next major installment in the series. After the game was unveiled at The Game Awards 2024 and moved from pre-production to full development at the end of the same year, the team set themselves an ambitious goal: a new adventure that would be the beginning of a new saga, with Ciri as the protagonist.
The development team promises a massive, immersive open world, deep storytelling and dynamic mechanics built on the modern Unreal Engine 5. For fans, the target release year of 2028 means waiting nearly two years.
Nowakovsky stressed, however, that steps should not be taken hastily to avoid mistakes made in the past with major releases. The lengthy development cycle also meets the studio’s new quality standards and guarantees a smooth, bug-free gaming experience from day one.
Although The Witcher 4 is absent from this year’s Gamescom, fans of the universe don’t have to miss out on new content: with The Witcher 3: Song of Days expansion, players can look forward to a new adventure about Geralt of Rivia as early as 2027, which will serve as a prelude to the events of the fourth part.
