NVIDIA and The Coalition Studios have announced that the upcoming action game Gears of War: E-Day will be the first game to support the new NVIDIA RTX Mega Geometry technology. This solution aims to overcome the long-standing problem of ray tracing working properly next to high polygonal models.

In the standard Unreal Engine 5 pipeline, the Nanite micropolygon geometry system produces extremely detailed scenes, but the engine is forced to use a simplified low-polygon mesh for ray tracing because rendering rays using the original millions of Nanite polygons severely slows down the frame rate. As a result, shadows and reflections often don’t match the geometry of realistic, highly detailed objects in the frame, and can flicker when the camera moves.

NVIDIA has invested six years developing RTX Mega Geometry technology, which allows native Nanite detail to be used directly for ray tracing without catastrophic performance penalties. This ensures that small debris, rocks, vehicles and foliage produce correct shadows, as well as accurate reflections without aliasing artifacts. In the future, this technology will evolve to become part of the updated Microsoft DirectX Raytracing 2.0 industry standard, making Nanite ray tracing available to all UE5 developers.

The game will be released on October 6, 2026 on PC and Xbox Series X/S.
