Microsoft has introduced a new feature to the Xbox ecosystem that will give owners of supported games on physical discs the opportunity to digitally license them without giving up the disc itself. This innovative test will begin on August 31st among members of the Xbox Insider program.
This feature is designed for Xbox One and Xbox Series X games distributed on physical media. To obtain a digital license, owners need to insert a supported disc into the console and launch the game. Thereafter, the digital rights to use it will be assigned to the account.
The license you receive will enable you to enjoy the benefits of the digital version, including Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming (if supported by the game). The disk itself will continue to work according to the same rules and can therefore be used as before.
Microsoft said the new system will support thousands of games at launch, and the list of supported projects will expand over time. The company noted that certain projects will not be immediately included in the program.
