According to reports, a London neurosurgeon used artificial intelligence to perform the world’s first immediate surgery to remove a brain tumor. The operation saved a 48-year-old patient’s vision. The Guardian.

The operation took place in May at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (NHNN), part of University College London Hospitals Trust (UCLH), but was not announced until the patient, Rhys Hibbert, was awaiting recovery.
The surgery was performed by a surgical team with full control over the situation. The AI system instantly analyzed the video captured by the camera to help identify key structures that should be avoided near the patient’s 11 mm pituitary gland tumor, such as nerves and blood vessels.
The surgery marks the first use of new artificial intelligence technology that helps identify tiny anatomy in the brain, color-codes important structures and helps surgeons safely identify them.
A hospital spokesman said the pituitary gland, blood vessels and nerves that control vision are so close to each other that an error of even a millimeter could have serious consequences, possibly leading to blindness, stroke or death. Artificial intelligence helps doctors instantly identify dangerous areas to avoid so that tumors can be removed as safely as possible.
