Playground Games at Gamescom shared a ton of details about Fable as the game nears release. During the Xbox Live, the developers showed off gameplay in the city, which will be affected by player decisions and actions. Now they’ve shared details about the game’s combat system, and a nearly 30-minute video of the battle has surfaced online from the GameRiot portal.
At Gamescom, Playground Games studio allowed journalists to try out the new Fable’s combat system for themselves for the first time. As part of the “Mud and Death” mission, players join Heroes Guild Master Humphrey into a flooded mine, where he encounters skeletons and ghosts. Key takeaways from the preview of the game’s combat system:
- The combat system inherits the classic concept of “strength, agility and will” from the original game.
- Players can switch between melee and ranged weapons non-stop, as well as use magic. In this case, the choice of equipment directly affects the style of combat.
- In the demo, you have access to a two-handed hammer – it’s slow but deals a lot of damage, can hit multiple enemies in one hit, and has a powerful charged attack. The hero can also dodge and parry attacks. In the video you can see that a successful parry can decapitate a skeleton, leaving the enemy vulnerable.
- The magic in the demo includes 8 different types of spells. For example, fireball allows you to interrupt attacks and create powerful explosions, lightning can hit multiple enemies in a chain attack, and dash can teleport the hero to the target. There is also a spell that turns people into chickens. This spell creates unusual “skeletal chickens” when fighting the undead.
- For long-range combat, you can use a highly accurate and slow-drawing bow, as well as a high-speed crossbow with a magazine. When shooting, enemies have certain weaknesses that allow them to direct arrows more effectively.
- All abilities of the combat system (melee weapons, ranged weapons, 8 spells) can be used directly in combat, without the need to constantly access menus. This allows you to combine different techniques – for example, using magic to immobilize a group of enemies, shooting to stun powerful enemies, and using melee techniques to finish off the attack.
Below you can see Fable gameplay featuring a lot of combat. Let us remind you that the game itself will release on February 23, 2027 on Xbox Series X | S and PC, plus direct Game Pass.
