Developer Playground Games and publisher Xbox Game Studios showed off detailed game content to the public during a Gamescom live broadcast. The section shown is mainly dedicated to exploring the vibrant capital city of Ballstone and the various opportunities to interact with its residents. The leader also showed off complete missions, a dynamic dialogue system with humorous decision-making, and a revised combat system. The action RPG is scheduled to be available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S on February 23, 2027, and will be included in Game Pass immediately upon release.
The gameplay demo shown begins shortly after the introductory events of the main story. After the protagonist’s hometown is turned to stone, the journey leads to the metropolis Ballstone. There you must enter the Heroes Guild and contact Golden Humphrey. The film provides insight into the lives of the characters’ townspeople, as well as the hero’s own home, including his spouse and daughter. Typical stylistic devices of the series, such as strange heads speaking directly into the camera, are also celebrating their return.
As part of the mission shown, the player must decide how to deal with the needy Humphrey – for example, whether to buy him a beer or spill the drink on him to get his attention. When Humphrey loses the Heroes Guild charter in the game, the mission becomes infiltration and combat missions. The game relies on the freedom of narrative choices, which have a direct impact on your character’s reputation within the city.
The combat system shown is called “Style-Weaving Combat” by the developers. It combines the classic pillars of melee, ranged, and magic into one fluid system. You can switch back and forth between a two-handed hammer, a bow or crossbow, and magic spells in combat without having to switch menus. In addition to dodging and parrying, you can also use spells like fireball, chain lightning, or polymorph to briefly turn your opponent into a chicken.
Additionally, the developers also gave an in-depth look at the role-playing game’s talent trees. Through accumulated experience points, you can unlock new skills and finishing moves to further perfect your favorite play style. The demo ends with a massive confrontation with an enemy gang, where all combat mechanics and special abilities are demonstrated directly in practice.
