Xbox: Microsoft begins internal testing of disc-to-digital conversion

Microsoft is continuing to push the link between its physical game collection and its digital ecosystem: long-awaited beta testing of disc-to-digital capabilities will begin this month, as the company officially confirmed. Starting August 31, members of the Xbox Insider program can test the feature on their consoles. The system converts physical data carriers into digital licenses linked directly to your own user account. Microsoft said it views the measure as an important step toward protecting digital games and increasing the flexibility of its own platforms.

The principle of the new feature is based on the redemption of digital usage rights. When you insert a supported disc into your Xbox One or Xbox Series X and launch the game, you’ll be allowed to claim digital rights for your account.

Once this process is complete, you will be able to enjoy all the benefits of the digital version. This includes Xbox Play Anywhere functionality and the use of Xbox cloud gaming on compatible devices.

A central aspect of the announcement concerns the handling of physical data carriers. According to the manufacturer, the disc retains its original functionality on its own console. However, to prevent abuse, the system binds the generated digital license to the corresponding user account.

If the physical disc is later resold or activated on a different account, the associated digital license on the original profile will expire again.

According to Microsoft, Xbox One and Xbox Series X have supported thousands of games since the beta phase began on August 31. The list of compatible games will continue to expand throughout the test run until its public release at a later date.

Classic games from the original Xbox and Xbox 360 are not yet included in the program. At this time, an exact date for global release outside of internal test groups is still to be determined.
