Anthropic had a rather unpleasant run-in with the U.S. military this year, which resulted in the AI startup not only losing its contract with the Pentagon but ending up on a list of companies that are unreliable from a national security perspective. A U.S. District Court this week declared the U.S. military’s decision illegal and in violation of the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

District Judge Rita Lin ruled that the U.S. Department of Defense violated this provision of the U.S. Constitution by determining that Anthropic’s activities constituted a national security threat purely for retaliatory purposes and hoped to use the company’s example as a warning to all other market participants. The judge said there was no clear basis for the actions of U.S. officials. In addition, the judge said that U.S. federal law does not allow defendants represented by the Pentagon to impose such strict restrictions on corporate activities simply out of a desire to respond to criticism. human representation CNBCThey welcomed the court’s ruling.

Let’s recall that in early March of this year, Anthropic was included in a list of companies that were unreliable vendors from a U.S. national security perspective. The conflict between the artificial intelligence startup and U.S. officials erupted over a defense contract involving the Pentagon’s use of anthropic artificial intelligence models. The startup’s attempts to limit its use for automated target selection on the battlefield and blanket surveillance of U.S. citizens have faced opposition from the military, which will not tolerate such directives from contractors.

Anthropic has filed legal actions in San Francisco and Washington, seeking to overturn the Pentagon’s decision. While the San Francisco district judge’s current ruling nominally gives Anthropic a victory in the case, the company has yet to defend its interests in a Washington court. Until Anthropic is deemed correct on this level, the company cannot be removed from the Pentagon’s blacklist. The outcome of the dispute could somehow impact the company’s upcoming initial public offering within the next two months. The startup is not seeking the right to renew its contract with the Pentagon in its lawsuit, but simply to be removed from the blacklist.
