The mobile industry is facing “severe hardware supply constraints that will impact device memory availability,” which could impact user experience. To address this issue, Google will set new performance thresholds in several areas, such as dynamic memory usage and bitmap management. The company will add code optimization requirements to prevent users from experiencing application slowdowns and performance-related glitches.

To support developers, Google will launch new tools that will alert them when apps exceed new thresholds so developers can take action to optimize their code. Over the course of the year, the company will release new diagnostics and release more details about the Memory Limiter feature, which prevents apps from consuming too much memory.

Google says the changes are intended to help developers of games and other Android apps deliver a premium experience to users and adapt to new market conditions where memory may not be as widely available, especially on low-cost devices. The new requirements will take effect in February 2027. By April, all apps in the Google Play Store must meet zero-click sign-in requirements when migrating devices: If an app requires an account to be logged in, it must remain logged in when moved between Android devices – for this, there is the Android Restore Credentials API.
