No longer just a joke: Fool Theory developer promises to reveal a new, serious side of Buttercup in The Witcher 3's Song of the Past add-on

The Fool Theory team spoke at Gamescom 2026 about the upcoming expansion Song of the Past, which will be the final chapter for Geralt of Rivia before the series moves on to a new hero. The plot will revolve around the deep male friendship between the witcher and the bard Dandelion, and players will travel to Leiten, the poet’s hometown.

Creative director Carolina Kuzia-Rokosz noted that the developers worked hard to present Buttercup as not just a fun assistant, but a multi-faceted person capable of taking on responsibilities and experiencing deep emotions.

The story will also revolve around the bard’s cousin Lila as she attempts to uncover the dark secrets of a seemingly peaceful region. The project will be released in 2027, with a completely free remaster of the third part available to players on September 29, 2026, containing all previous content.
